Mardi Gras Indians: can cultural appropriation occur on the margins?

Last week, the New York Times published a really interesting article concerning Mardi Gras Indians, specifically looking at the possibility of  the "Indians" copyrighting their costumes so their images can't be used in things like calendars, promotional materials, etc, without their consent. I'll get to that issue in a second post, but I think the entire concept of Mardi Gras Indians deserves a deeper look.

Let's look at the 'culture' of the Mardi Gras Indians, independent of history and context (something the anthropologist in me cringes at, but work with me), then we'll backtrack a bit.

These men and women call themselves "Indians." They are members of "tribes," with names like "Yellow Pocahontas," "Geronimo Hunters," and "Flaming Arrows" (a complete list of the tribes is here). They wear over-the-top, elaborate costumes based (very) loosely on American Indian powwow regalia--with headdresses, feathers, and beading (there is a slideshow on nytimes.com that can be found here):

(image via nytimes.com)

They have an anthem called "Indian Red" whose lyrics include:

I've got a Big Chief, Big Chief, Big Chief of the Nation
Wild, wild creation

He won't bow down, down on the ground
Oh how I love to hear him call Indian Red

When I throw my net in the river
I will take only what I need
Just enough for me and my lover

Objectively, out of context, this is by-definition cultural appropriation. Imagine if these were white men and women. I should be offended...right?

But it's complicated. The history of Mardi Gras Indians comes out of a history of shared oppression and marginality between the Black and Native residents, or some stories point to a desire to honor Native communities who took in escaped slaves. Wikipedia (again, the academic cringes, ha.) notes, of the history:
Mardi Gras Indians have been parading in New Orleans at least since the mid-19th century, possibly before. The tradition was said to have originated from an affinity between Africans and Indians as minorities within the dominant culture, and blacks' circumventing some of the worst racial segregation; laws by representing themselves as Indians. There is also the story that the tradition began as an African American tribute to American Indians who helped runaway slaves.
I still see some problems with that, the "honoring" argument is what many proponents of Indian mascots use, but what it boils down to, for me, is the question:

Can one marginalized group appropriate another?

Inherent in the concept of cultural appropriation is the notion of power. The group in power takes cultural aspects of a subordinate community out of context and uses them how they see fit. These Mardi Gras Indians are African American, and arguably at the lowest economic strata of society (the nytimes article talks about copyrighting as a means to recoup money for these performers). They are by no means in a position of power over Native communities in Louisiana or elsewhere. The Mardi Gras Indian culture does not appear to come out of a desire to "play Indian", and in many ways, it has moved outside of the realm of cultural appropriation into a distinct culture and community of it's own. But above all, it seems the history comes not out of a relationship of power, but out of a shared position of marginality and discrimination.

So, in this sense, I find it hard to write my usual rant on an insensitive appropriation of Native culture, but, on the other hand, it still makes me uncomfortable.

Thoughts?

(thanks for sticking with me, I know that was a long one)

Actress Shruti Hassan biography

Actress Shruti Hassan biography
Actress Shruti Hassan biographyShruti Hassan Biography: Shruti Haasan is an Indian singer turned actress. Her parents are the noted actors, Kamal Haasan and Sarika.

Early career
Shruti Rajalakshmi Haasan was born to actors Kamal Haasan and Sarika on January 28, 1986 in Chennai, India. She also has a younger sister named Akshara, who represents India nationally for Ballroom Latin dancing. Haasan studied at the Lady Andal in Chennai, until 10th grade, when she moved to Mumbai to read psychology at St Andrew’s College.

However, Haasan shifted her focus to cinema and music, and eventually travelled to the USA to continue to learn music at the Musicians Institute in California, before returning to Chennai.

Singing
Shruti Haasan sang her first song aged just six in her father's Thevar Magan in the composition of Ilaiyaraaja. Later while pursuing her studies in school, Haasan made her singing debut in the Hindi language film, Chachi 420, singing a duet performing for the voice of a child, with her father Kamal Haasan, who also directed the film. Shruti Haasan's second song came in Hey Ram, where she sang the bilingual versions of the title theme, Rama Rama with her father, in Hindi and in Tamil. The album from Ilayaraaja, which was critically praised, won Haasan accolades for her efforts with reviewers, Screen India praising that she "has the makings of a good singer, and with some training she should go great guns".

Shruti Haasan, has most recently sung in a Tamil film, for Gautham Menon's Vaaranam Aayiram under the composition of Harris Jayaraj. As of November 2008, Haasan is also midway through her untitled debut album, which she has composed, written and sung, and is set for release in mid-2009.

Acting
After pursuing a career in singing, Shruti Haasan branched out a career into modelling. She started by starring appearing in the Frappe! magazine version of September 2007, since then she has gone on to appear in Verve.

In 2000, Haasan made her cinematic debut in the Tamil and Hindi bilingual film, Hey Ram, directed by her father. She made a cameo appearance as the daughter of Vallabhai Patel in the biopic of Mahatma Gandhi.

After rejecting prominent film offers, most notably the lead role in Venkat Prabhu's Saroja, reports suggested in late 2007 that Haasan was set to make her full debut as a heroine in 2008 with a movie opposite Madhavan directed by Nishikanth Kamath. Despite Madhavan admitting that the news "was premature", she signed up to the film, which was titled, Endrendrum Punnagai, only to be stalled prior to production. Eventually Haasan signed up to Soham Shah's Luck opposite Imran Khan, a Bollywood film.

Music composing
After much speculation, Shruti Haasan was confirmed as the music composer for the upcoming Tamil film Unnaipol Oruvan, with lead role played by her father Kamal Haasan who is also co-producer of the movie under Rajkamal International. The bilingual, is a remake of the successful Hindi film, A Wednesday!, but the soundtracks of both the projects are entirely separate.

Random Appropriation of the Day!

Via my friend Allison's friend Kip--taken in Versailles, France. If you can't tell, the orange peel is wearing a headdress, and the flavor is called "Indien" (you can click to make it bigger). It's flavored with grenadine, which gives it the pinkish-red color. I was sitting here, trying to figure out the connection between grenadine and Indians--like were pomegranates indigenous to the New World or something? But grenadine is a French word!

Then my friend was like "duh Adrienne, they called it Indian because it's RED."

Sometimes, I guess I forget that not everything requires deep analysis and interpretation. Sometimes, it's just straight up racist. Insensitivity ftw!

Also, if anyone out there speaks French and I'm missing something, please let me know.

Random Appropriation of the Day! Dreamcatcher=all inclusive Native traditions

I remember seeing this sign at the entrance to the campus health center, and raising my eyebrows at the randomness and hypocrisy of it all, but only when Leon sent it over, did I start to realize how straight-up nonsensical it is.

I am, of course, referring to that dream catcher.

I would assume that we're supposed to believe that these are all "Healing Traditions" supported by the health center--but honestly, can we put massage and chicken soup on the same level as Native spiritual traditions? And how is a dreamcatcher representative of healing/medicine in any Native community?

And as Leon pointed out: "not sure when Vaden has ever incorporated "Native healing traditions" in its services, much less, helped a Native out before...but apparently they like to say they do." I don't think anyone would argue that Vaden is anything less than a western-style medical facility, and I know the Native community has come up against some issues there, especially in the mental health services. Not exactly incorporating Native healing traditions.

I can just picture the meeting where they were developing this campaign: "so we've got the Eastern traditions represented with a buddah and some non descript written asian characters...we should throw something Native American up there. ideas?" "what about a dream catcher? that's Indian!"

Overall, just a weird, silly, way for them to proclaim understanding and multiculturalism by relying on a ubiquitous stereotype.

(Thanks Leon!)

Tribal Fashion Roundup!

I've gotten a few tips this week about more tribal fashion appropriations, so I thought I would compile a few of them into a single post, because let's be honest, I'm a little lazy this week.

I found the image above thanks to Lanova posting my hipster headdress piece on a blog that "loved" this headdress (thanks girl!). It's from Coyote Pheonix's Etsy shop, and the description reads:
Great piece for burningman or other festivals. Looks great as a decoration piece hanging on the wall as well. Ties at the base of the neck like a headband with leather strap.
Also, one of the tags on the headdress is "shaman". Ok, appropriations aside, are there actually people out there who see this, swoon, and say "I must have this! my life is not complete until I have a dead coyote to wear on my head!". But, I guess, considering 14% of this fine nation thinks President Obama is, in fact, the Antichrist, I wouldn't be surprised that such people exist (related? not at all. but I just read these poll results, so...).

This one comes from my sister's fabulous suitemate Kathleen:

Belt and keychains from Jack Spade in Soho, website here. These seem pretty out of place with the whole Jack Spade asthetic, to me anyway. They're known for their preppy men's bags and accessories, with military inspirations and "timeless" pieces. Not usually what we'd associate with the Native trends. interesting.

Finally, a picture of a page from Lucky Magazine via my friend Genia (click to make it bigger):

The mocassins front and center are the Nicole Richie mocs I posted earlier, and there's a pendleton bag on the left. I love how Native American trends are "global"--um, you can't get more American than the styles of the original peoples in the US.

Just a few samples of many...I think I could start an entire blog of just Native Appropriations in fashion. sigh.

Nicole Richie Regrets over Tattoo

Nicole Richie says she now regrets having tattoos and piercings. Now that Nicole is a mother of two and has a more mature life, she regrets the wild mistakes from her youth. The wife of Joel Madden says she is embarrased by the scars on her body but aht she will keep her three tattoos - on her neck, her back and her foot.

She removed her belly button piercing when she was pregnant. She said that she is feeling more mature now and also more confident from her relationship with her husband and the love of her children. She doesn't need the confidence boost of tattoos on her skin to make her feel sexy and attractive. I believe her children will have a hard time convincing her to let them have a tattoo when they grow up.

Genius, Ben Stiller, Anson Williams

I listened to someone on public radio talking about genius. It's not just genetic, he said. People who are "geniuses", are driven to succeed. They are driven to improve their skills. They don't just do what they're already good at.

That's probably my problem. I never tried to improve. I was always driven to look as good as possible with what little ability I had.

I heard something else. An interview with Ben Stiller talking about his new movie in which he plays an angry imbittered 40-year-old whose life didn't go the way he wanted. So he's now hyper-critical of people who are more successful than him.

Anyway, I found some videos of Anson Williams singing on You Tube. At one time, I might have made fun of him. But now I don't want to be hyper-critical of people who are more successful than me.

mst3k on YouTube

There are lots of them. Lots of episodes. They're great! I love them! But...but...

I was lying in bed in the middle of the night, my laptop on the bed playing---which one was it? I don't remember.

I began experiencing mixed feelings about Mystery Science Theater 3000. But why? What was it?

I can't even remember what I was watching. It was the middle of the night.

Was it Joel or Mike?

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

This new movie is just coming out and it's not set in a tattoo shop in London or in Miami. It's set in a cold place with not much ink action!

The movie is bBased on the first book from the Millennium trilogy, by the Swedish journalist Stieg Larsson. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is set in Sweden. The film version has managed to cover most of the book's salient points which is very impressive.

The director of this thriller, Niels Arden Oplev, is taking us for a very unpleasant holiday in a very cold and dark Sweden and we are not dealing with beautiful blonde women but with serial killers and dirty family secrets. We start with the search for Harriet who went missing 40 years ago, aged 16. Her family wants to find the murderer but the investigation is slow and difficult until they get help from someone special - the girl with the dragon tattoo, Lisbeth (Noomi Rapace).

Don’t be put off by the black hair and piercings; she’s the one with the talent to find the truth. With the help from the girl with the dragon tattoo, we start to find out more about this sordid city which lead to the uncovering of a series of brutal murders. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is a great thriller and with enough suspense to make you want to know who the killer is, unless you have read the novel before.

Peter Andre Starts Laser Treatment on Katie Tattoo

We were discussing this week the celebration of 50 years of LASER and the many ways we now use LASER in our daily lives. One of the many uses of laser is tattoo removal surgery and this is what Peter Andre has decided to do on is Katie Tattoo.

Although we all thought for a while that the couple would eventually get back together, it is now sure that it's not going to happen. Katie has married again to new husband Alex Reid, 34, and Peter needs to move on. Part of the process of moving on is also removing the tattoos. He's not the first man to have to make his way to the laser clinic to have a tattoo removed.

The Aussie singer, 37, has already had the first of three laser sessions needed to remove the tattoo. Last year, he still wanted to keep the word "Katie" tattoo despite the split. He was probably still thinking about his ex too much to commit to laser surgery but after a few months of dealing with the break-up and the many requests from Katie, 31, Peter decided it was time to have it done and he booked into a tattoo removal clinic for a £240 course of laser treatment.

He wants to move on and removing the tattoo is his way of doing it. Katie also has a tattoo of Peter's name on her wrist. She decided to have it covered rather than have surgery using a laser to remove the tattoo. She had it covered with a black cross a few weeks after the break-up.

Ke$ha, the headdress, and a trend that won't go away

I don't watch American Idol. But, this morning I woke up to a flurry of text messages and emails about Ke$ha's performance last night--looks like another pop star decided donning a headdress would be an awesome way to show how "raw" and "counterculture" she was.

Here's the selection (via MTV) with her sporting a headdress and face paint: UPDATE 2/25: MTV took down the link, so here's a youtube version. The headdress comes out at 2:26.

After the jump, some more blogger's thoughts, an Outkast flashback, and analysis.

I'm not the first to post on this today, fellow Native blogger Lisa Charleyboy has a post on Urban Native Girl Stuff here, Racialicious has an open thread going here, and most of the news bulletins about her performance mention Ke$ha donning a "Native American headdress."

The thing that annoys me, besides the obvious, is that the headdress had absolutely nothing to do with the song, the performance, anything. The song is about picking up a guy at a bar, or something, and has such deep and fantastically well written lyrics as:
I dont really care where you live at just turn around boy and let me hit that.
Dont be a little b***h with your chit chat just show me where your d**k's at.
So beautiful, right? The asthetic of the performance was more futuristic/technological, with dancing TV screens, silver, black, electrical chords, the like. Her dress is even metallic silver. So where does a headdress even come into play here?

There has been a lot of outrage from Native outlets, and rightly so, but this isn't a new phenomenon. Anyone remember the 2004 Grammy's? And this performance by Outkast?

That one still makes me mad. Think of how many layers of approval these performances have to go through--executives, publicists, set designers, lighting, performers--and not one person thought these might be offensive? That's so troubling.

Headdresses aren't traditional to my community (though many wanabees would have you thinking otherwise--so many "Cherokee Headdresses" out there. ugh), but when I see them in the mainstream media, it usually is associated with people who deserve deep respect in Indian country; Rick West (former director of NMAI) wore his at the opening of the museum, Joe Medicine Crow wore his when accepting the Presidential Medal of Freedom...I could go on. Lisa Charleyboy pointed out that warbonnets like the one Ke$ha is wearing have true spiritual significance:
The significance of the war bonnet in traditional Native cultures is huge. It is used in ceremonies, and it is only worn by those who are awarded them after many years of effort, and usually only be men. No artist would dare don a kippah or a turban so the same respect should be given to Native peoples and their traditional, ceremonial wear.
It's so true. We come back to it again and again...why is it deemed 'ok' to appropriate Native culture, religion, and spirituality, and not others?

The fact that this "trend" is catching on really bothers me. I was out at the mall in SF today (I'm on spring break!), and spotted the window displays at Juicy Couture. Their mannequins are wearing headdresses. They even had a tie-dyed tipi inside the store! I didn't have my camera, and my cell phone pictures turned out horribly, but I'll try to snap some tomorrow. I keep hoping this will fade out, but unfortunately it seems to be just catching speed.

Eté Indien: French Glamour gets in on the tribal fashion trends

Fashion Foiegras posted a first look at French Glamour's new spread on American Indian fashion trends, with the caption: "American Indian is back in style! Rock the look with a first glimpse from French Glamour." But my first question: did we ever go out of style? ;)

A lot of the Navajo-style jewelry is gorgeous, but (even with my limited french skills) it doesn't look like they're Native made. sad.

After the jump, more images from the shoot. (all taken from www.fashionfoiegras.com)

50 years of LASER

We are celebrating 50 Years of Laser Innovation and to mark the occasion, there are plenty of exhibition organised to tell us more about the laser and its use in everyday life.

The laser was not discovered from a single breakthrough by one individual, but from a series of developments from Albert Einstein who first developed the idea in 1917, which was later experimented and verified, to other scientists who then completed the research which led to the first patent for a laser awarded in March 1960.

There are plenty of examples to illustrate the numerous applications of laser in our daily lives, such as computer transmissions via fiber optics, DVDs, CDs, laser surgery, measurements, advanced hair removal, reading a barcode or removing a tattoo. In other words, laser technology is impossible to escape.
When it was first invented, no one was sure how this technology would be used. Today, the laser is used as a scientific research tool and in thousands of commercial applications.

When it comes to removing a tattoo, the best options at the moment are covering, ie creating a new tattoo over the existing one to hide it or laser therapy. Laser tattoo removal is not 100% return to your skin tone but enough to leave only a few very faint lines.

By the way, what does LASER stand for? Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. That will impress your friends just as much as your new tattoo.

HIV fight before World Cup

We remember that many call girls made their way to Berlin during the Olympic Games. That's when we were told by the press that a major sporting even, means a lot of new tourists in town which mean a great demand for holiday romance or casual sex.

In June, South Africa will host a major sporting event and Britain has committed to send 42 million condoms to South Africa in order to help fight HIV before the World Cup.

An estimated 5.7 million South Africans are living with HIV. That's about 20% of all adults. There are about 1,400 new HIV infections and nearly 1,000 Aids deaths every day.

President Jacob Zuma has asked for help to make sure the World Cup does not end up in a health disaster. Britain is responding to the request and will give 42m condoms to South Africa as part of an HIV prevention drive before the start of the World Cup in June 2010.

It is estimated that up to half a million visitors will travel to the country for the event.

Aishwarya Rai - Biography

Aishwarya Rai - Bollywood actress
Aishwarya Rai - BiographyAishwarya Rai Biography: Aishwarya Krishnaraj Rai was born on 1 November 1973 in Mangalore. Her father Krishnaraj Rai was a marine engineer and her mother Vrinda Rai is a writer. She has an older brother Aditya Rai who is in the merchant navy. He also happened to co-produce Dil Ka Rishta in 2003, which starred Ash. The family moved to Mumbai where she studied at the Arya Vidya Mandir and later moved to Ruparel College. She was aspiring to study architecture but that did not take off while her career in the glamour industry took off.

Ash won the coveted Miss World crown in 2004. Soon after this she pledged to donate her eyes after her death. She went on to become the brand ambassador for brands like L’Oreal, Pepsi, and Coco Cola. She struck a pose for many international magazines like TIME and was also voted one of the most attractive and influential women by several polls. She is the first Indian actor to be part of the jury at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival. She has appeared in The Oprah Winfrey Show, Late Show with David Letterman, and 60 Minutes. She was also the first Indian actress to be replicated in wax at Madame Tussaud’s Museum in London.

She was briefly involved with actors Salman Khan and Vivek Oberoi before marrying actor Abhishek Bachchan, son of the iconic Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan. They were married in 2007. The couple have acted together in many movies. They were seen in the latest Lux ad and have been roped in to be part of PETA’s Lovebirds campaign.

The Rai Magic
Aishwarya began her career in the film industry with a Tamil film Iruvar in 1997 which was a hit as opposed to her Hindi film Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya with Bobby Deol. She won the Filmfare Best Actress Award for her next Tamil film Jeans, which was also an entry to the Oscars. In 1999, she gained recognition in Bollywood with hits like Taal and Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, in which she played opposite Salman Khan and Ajay Devgan, her role as Nandini fetching her the Filmfare Best Actress Award.

In 2000, her Tamil film Kandukondain Kandukondain, saw a good turnout. She took on the role of Shirley, Shahrukh Khan’s sister in Josh and then played his love interest in Mohabbatein which won her a nomination for the Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award. In Hamara Dil Aapke Paas Hai, she played Preeti Virat, a rape victim and was considered for the Filmfare Best Actress Award. The year 2001 was a quiet year for Ash.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Devdas (2002), in which she played Paro with Shahrukh Khan and Madhuri Dixit, was an instant blockbuster. It also received a special screening at the Cannes Film Festival. She won the Filmfare Best Actress award. In 2003, she acted the part of Binodini in a Bengali film Choker Bali which was based on a novel by Rabindranath Tagore. The film was nominated for the Golden Leopard at the Locarno International Film Festival.

The year 2004 saw Ash in her first English film, Gurinder Chaddha’s Bride & Prejudice, an adaptation of Jane Austen’s Pride & Prejudice. Her performance as Neerja in Rituparno Ghosh’s Raincoat was praised. This was followed by her second English film in 2005, The Mistress of Spices, with Dylan McDermott of The Practice fame. Her dance sequence Kajra Re from Bunty Aur Babli became one of the most popular tunes of the year.

She had two films out in 2006. Umrao Jaan with Abhishek Bachchan failed to do well while Dhoom 2 where she played Sunehri and shared a ‘controversial’ liplock with Hrithik Roshan was a big hit. In 2007, she played Sujata opposite Abhishek Bachchan in Guru, based on the industrialist Dhirubhai Ambani and it was successful. Provoked, which was based on a real episode of domestic violence, won critical acclaim. The other English film, The Last Legion, did not do so well.

Jodhaa Akbar, released in 2008, in which she acted the part of Jodhaa Bai with Hrithik Roshan was average. The sequel to Sarkar, Ram Gopal Varma’s Sarkar Raj, in which she plays a CEO alongside Amitabh Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan, is said to be one of her best performances till date.

In 2009, Rai looked her gorgeous self in The Pink Panther 2 with Steve Martin.

Going Strong
She was also busy shooting for Mani Ratnam’s Raavan with Abhishek Bachchan and Endhiran with Rajnikanth in 2009. Both movies will be released in 2010 along with Action Replay with Akshay Kumar and Guzaarish, in which she will play Hrithik Roshan’s nurse.

North American Indians: a step by step guide to "playing Indian"

My friend Katie is currently in her first year of teaching 4th grade on the Rosebud Sioux reservation in South Dakota (go Katie!), and she sent me a scanned copy of this ridiculous book that was in her classroom library. I'll let her give the context:
"I finally started going through my classroom's library and was pretty appalled to find this book (along with the typical Indian the Cupboard and Little House on the Prairie-esque books).  I teach 4th grade on the Rosebud Reservation; 100% of my students are Lakota.  The book purports to give a history of Native Americans and a guide to Native crafts, but what it ends up being is a veritable handbook for white kids to "play Indian."  All the photos are of white kids dressed up as Indians!  I can't find one picture (other than the historical ones, of course) of a Native American child.  Even more disturbingly, the descriptions make it sound as if these white kids are authentic representations of Indian clothing, etc. The worst thing is that this book is (now was, ugh) in the library of a classroom full of Lakota children.  It's like hey kids, these pictures of white kids can teach you how to be Indian better than your own people!"
After the jump, scanned selections of the book. Prepare yourself, it's pretty bad. (All images can be clicked for a bigger version)

First thing of note: the title page says "Consultant: Anne Armitage, BA--The American Museum in Britain. So, there weren't any qualified "consultants" who were actually Native? or I don't know, maybe in AMERICA? Also, this is published by Scholastic--usually a well known and trusted name in children's books.

This page talks about "Indian clothing". Everything is in past tense (as is the whole book), and it has instructions on how to make a "war bonnet" along with a historic photograph.

"Hairstyles were important ways to look different but still fit in with tribal traditions. Some groups smeared their hair with mud and sculpted it into different shapes." Um, really?

The descriptions of the tribes (not to mention the accompanying images) make me so upset. The past tense and historic descriptions would leave any child thinking there was no way a Nez Perce, Chumash, Tlingit, or Navajo person still lived today.

Katie pointed out that the caption with the boy reads: "Plains warriors carried spears and hide shield and wore elaborate headdresses for ceremonial occasions", implying that he IS a "plains warrior".

More tribal descriptions--the description of the seminole is especially interesting. It's mostly about North American settlers and influence rather than the tribe.

look at the boy's stance. Sitting "Indian style".

A couple of things: I like the fact the "Plains Warrior" and the "Seminole" are playing stickball--complete disregard for regionality of the game. Also, the one reference to traditions continuing today mentions that a form of this game is still played today "called lacrosse." Not that tribes still play the traditional form, which they do.

"Early European Explorers and settlers tried to write down the sounds of Indian words, but some could not accurately be conveyed using our alphabet."

The caption reads "a sioux boy and a nez perce girl would have been able to speak to each other using sign language".

So, overall, I'm a bit at a loss for words. I can't believe scholastic decided this was a great book to promote "hands on learning," and that someone decided this was a good book to put in a 4th grade reservation classroom. I mean, this is straight up, by definition cultural appropriation.

I also just googled the book, and found it on a few "recommended book" lists for teachers (gross), and found that there is an entire series of books that teach kids how to "play history": Egypt, Rome, Stone Age...and American Indians (completely the same, right?). It appears to be still in print.

Another example of placing Natives in the historic past, of melding of hundreds of distinct tribal traditions, of playing Indian, of not allowing Indians to be "experts" on ourselves, the "otherization" of American Indians...and about every other issue I've dealt with on this blog. So frustrating.

Major kudos to Katie for cleaning out her classroom library, her students are lucky to have her.

(Thanks Katie!)
