Man on the Street: Johnny Depp
There's so much about this look that's ripe for our bitchery; so ripe, we have to stand upwind from it: the purple shades, the keffiyeh, the beads, the hat, the striped shirt, the multiple rings and bracelets. It's all so ... so ... Johnny Depp. In fact, those folks in Japan better make sure they're not being scammed, because this is so Johnny Depp it almost makes him look like one of those slightly tragic celebrity impersonators. Wouldn't it be funny if he stepped off the plane to thousands of shrieking Johnny Depp fans but he's really some guy from Jersey who does appearances on the side to make alimony every month? He's probably all "I usually do Bat Mitzvahs but who says no to a paid trip to Japan? Score!"
But we're pretty sure this is the real Johnny Depp and while the outfit is primed for our sharp little tongues, the fact of the matter is, when you're an international superstar on the level of Johnny Depp and you're stepping off a plane in Japan for what looks to be some sort of promotional appearance, then you're going to want to look the way the world expects Johnny Depp to look. Not that we don't think he dresses like this in his private life (although we have no real way of knowing); just that this getup looks a bit like Depp's Greatest Hits, sartorially speaking. As if he just threw everything on at once that the public associates with his look.
Mind you, it's not a particularly bad look, and we admire him for working it so consistently for so long, but it does tend to look more like a costume than clothes at this point. A lot of big stars are like that after awhile.
But really, Japan. Check your credit card receipt. This guy might be a scam artist with plastic surgery bills to pay.
