Rose is a rose is a rose.
It's rare, when a designer says their inspiration was armor, for the clothes to actually evoke armor in any but the most esoteric of way, because conventional wisdom would have it that you can't make clothes for the 21st Century woman that look too much like real armor. Well, figure on Viktor & Rolf to blow that one out of the water. Their inspiration was medieval European armor and by god, they marched 30 or so armored women down that runway. Even more interesting, they made these clothes look fierce and even wearable (which is not always a consideration for them) while still maintaining all the elements that make one think of armor, right down to the heraldry. Now we know where that rose dress Natalie Portman wore to the Golden Globes came from. We have to say, we like the rose motif way better here, especially the two dresses in row 4. We also like the eye-popping pleating here, which really give these soft garments the look of something substantial and protective. This may be our favorite collection from these two. It's still got that V&R sense of craziness, but this time its paired with a sensibility that's both chic and intriguing.
