CURIOUS GEORGE continues its 5th season with a brand new Mother’s Day episode celebrating Hispanic heritage and Latina moms. Premiering Friday, May 6, 2011 (check local listings) on PBS KIDS, “Mother’s Day Surprise” features George helping Marco surprise his Mami with a party. Together, they make a piñata and other festive decorations while Marco’s sister and the Man with the Yellow Hat prepare some of the guest of honor’s favorite foods. But when they see her arriving early, will the crew be able to pull it together in time to make this one Mother’s Day she’ll never forget? Learn about Hispanic culture and help George and Marco celebrate El Día de la Madre in this special episode of CURIOUS GEORGE.

“This Mother’s Day, we’ll continue Season 5’s exploration of the social sciences by showing kids how Marco and his family celebrate El Dia de la Madre,” says WGBH Executive Producer Dorothea Gillim. “We hope that through George’s adventures, kids will be inspired to explore their own family’s customs.”

Leading up to the Mother’s Day episode, CURIOUS GEORGE will be re-airing two of its favorite episodes featuring George’s new friend Marco. In “George and Marco Sound it Out,” airing Tuesday, May 3, 2011, Marco helps George find a place for his favorite band, Lobos de Plata, to play after their bandstand in the park is taken down. After a day of checking the acoustics at different locations around town, their last hope is the museum. Will it have a room that is quiet, won’t produce echoes, and is large enough for an entire band? Then in “George’s Home Run,” airing Thursday, May 5, 2011, Marco tries to hit his first Little League home run while George plays scorekeeper. Marco helps George learn how to count from 1 to 10, and George returns the favor by agreeing to be a pinch runner for an injured Marco. Can a speedy little monkey run the bases fast enough for Marco to get his first home run? Tune in for these adventures and more May 3-6 on PBS KIDS!

This spring, Cartoon Network Enterprises and Warner Home Video are bringing the heat with the release of Cartoon Network’s first original CGI movie event – FIREBREATHER – on Blu-ray and DVD. My Take on the DVD

This DVD contains a great movie! If you already a fan, or if you are just starting you will be drawn in by the great writing as well as the great animation. I am a big superhero fan and there are some great connections between this cartoon and some of the superhero cartoons that I used to watch in the past as well. All-in-all this is a great DVD/movie and one that I would highly recommend in the future for anyone who loves CGI and cartoons!

The final two episodes of WE TV’s “Joan Knows Best” feature some great parenting drama when Joan is left in charge of her grandson’s sleepover. Among the boys’ activities is Joan’s “Beast Feast” where the kids get to eat their spaghetti dinner (and ice cream dessert) off of plastic trash bags taped to the floor. Needless to say it was a huge mess.

Empowering kids, their parents and caregivers to “turn off the lights” during Earth Hour (March 26, 2011 at 8:30 pm)—and to incorporate easy, environmentally sustainable actions “beyond the hour”—Pocoyo encourages kids to play a vital role in saving our planet! As today’s children are tomorrow’s guardians of our planet, their involvement and sense of responsibility is vital.

Children will be asked to turn off lights in their homes for one hour beginning at 8:30 pm (in their respective time zones) in what has become a worldwide collective display of peoples’ commitment to protect the planet.

In 2010, the Earth Hour message reached 1.3 billion and the event saw hundreds of millions of people switch off in more than 4,616 cities and towns in 128 countries.

Organizers are looking to extend the Earth Hour “Beyond the Hour,” inspiring us all to include small changes in daily habits–taking the bus instead of a car or even riding a bike to work, for example--which will collectively benefit the planet and create a better future. I watched along and was impressed to see the continued good underlying messages that I have seen in past episodes as well. Madeline on Stage was definitely our favorite. With my eldest being destined for acting, this movie intrigued her and I have to say it was interesting watching her with this episode.

This overall set is one that I would highly recommend for all parents for all Madeline fans!

My Take on the DVDHey Mr. Wilson!!! I still remember watching the re-runs of this show as a kid, so this DVD set was a great one that completely took me back to my childhood. I can say that my kids had never heard of Dennis the Menace before (and I didn't want them to get ideas about how to treat our neighbors), but I relented to see what they would think. They loved it! After seeing how they reacted to this, I have half a mind to try and get them to see some of the other great shows that I remember like: Leave it to Beaver and Lassie (other shows I grew up with).

I cannot wait to share more episodes with my family, and I hope that my girls like them as much as I did growing up. This is definitely a set worth owning for any Dennis the Menace fans!

Celebrate President's Day with three brand new adventures featuring everyone's favorite monkey, Curious George! Starting Monday, February 21 and continuing through Wednesday February 23, CURIOUS GEORGE is back with new episodes featuring George imagining a world where everything is monkey-sized, building a soapbox derby racer, making a George-O-Matic dessert vending machine, and meeting some ewe-tiful sheep.

Monday kicks off with Downhill Racer. When George hears about the annual soapbox derby, he enlists Allie to help him make the coolest car a monkey can. Will their car made out of wagon wheels, a kayak, and brakes from a buggy race past the finish line or are they on a crash course? Next in Book Monkey, George loves books and helping others, so volunteering to help the librarian is a no-brainer! But when she is called away, George may have volunteered for a bigger job than he expected.

On Tuesday, in Monkey Size Me, George fantasizes about a life where everything is monkey-sized...where he could drive a monkey-sized car, order a monkey-sized cake, and even wear a monkey-sized yellow hat! Then in Metal Detective, George loses his favorite robot at the beach. Can a monkey rescue a robot using a homemade metal detector?

Rounding out the new episodes on Wednesday, George is entranced by the museum's newest addition: a vending machine full of levers, wheels, springs, and healthy snacks! So when George is put in charge of making the dessert for an important dinner party, he can think of nothing better than creating his own dessert dispensing vending machine -- the George-O-Matic. Then in Curious George, Sheep Herder, George buys a cool new scarf at the Country Fair, but with one tug on a loose strand of wool, the entire scarf unravels! While searching for sheep that will give him some wool for another scarf, will George's baaaaaad day turn even worse?

Join Martha and her friends as they explore the arts while learning words such as soprano, conductor, legend, dramatize, and more.

“We hope Martha can provide a fun introduction to opera and classical music, theater, and Greek mythology,” says Senior Executive Producer Carol Greenwald. “For some kids, this will be their first exposure to these art forms. These subjects might seem really grown-up, but Martha has her own unique way of making them accessible to kids.”

The fun starts with “The Opera Contest” and “Maestro Martha” on Monday, February 21. In “The Opera Contest,” a local opera company is holding a contest to get kids interested in opera. When Martha helps the kids enter their own opera, will the audience shower them with applause? In “Maestro Martha,” bad guys Pablum and Weaselgraft have a plan to turn a charity concert into a heist by using the power of music...very strange music. Can Martha turn down the volume on their evil scheming before it’s too late?

On Wednesday, February 23, in “Martha Acts Up,” Mrs. Boxwood offers Martha a part in Alice in Wonderland. Martha is thrilled at her opportunity to become a star of the theater, but when she finds out she’s cast as the Cheshire cat, she’s horrified. Will Martha be able to get into character before the night of the show?

The week concludes on Friday, February 25 with the kids’ take on classic Greek myths. In “Myth Me?” and “TD’s Myth Take,” the gang turns a boring, rainy day into fun by acting out Greek myths. The trouble is, TD doesn’t like the way Greek myths end and decides to come up with his own endings. With the help of Martha and Truman, TD puts on a performance that exceeds everyone’s expectations.

Also airing during this special week is “Skits and Mr. Scruffles” and “Brave Truman” on February 22, and “Patrol Dog Martha” and “The Crooning Crook Caper” on February 24. Check local listings for exact airdates and times for all Martha Speaks episodes.

New this season is a feature called Dog Tags that lets kids upload a picture of their pet, decorate and tag it with vocabulary words from the show like miniature, peculiar and nimble, and submit their creations to Martha’s featured pet gallery. In addition, kids can play with theater-associated words in the new game Truman’s Word Play. In this game, Truman sets the stage for the rest of the Martha crew to put on a terrific show. Kids participate in the production by first selecting a word on the stage and then providing the action for three different uses of that word. The Real Martha and Her Owner, Author Susan MeddaughSusan Meddaugh was an illustrator of children’s books when a neighbor named Martha found a stray and asked Meddaugh if she could give the dog a proper home. Meddaugh named the dog Martha as a tribute. Shortly after Martha’s arrival, Meddaugh was feeding her young son alphabet soup. He wondered what would happen if Martha ate the soup. Would she speak? A perfectly simple question from a seven-year-old got the author/illustrator thinking: What pet lover doesn’t wonder what his pet would say if it could speak? Fast-forward 15 years, and the books in the Martha Speaks series have sold more than one million copies in the US, been widely translated throughout the world, and enjoyed enormous popular and critical acclaim.

New Martha Speaks books based on the PBS KIDS episodes are available from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. With a variety of formats geared to a range of reading levels, these TV-inspired books extend the fun beyond the television and computer screen.
